Just north of Banlung, Rattanakiri lies a beautiful nature area. This nature reserve is home to the indigenous Kreung people. This trip is a must do if you want to get a good impressionism of nature, but prefer not to camp.
Trip length: 16km
Difficulty: easy to medium.
At 08.30 AM we leave from the office in Banlung. In Kalai pi (Kalai two) you can get an impression of the life of the Kreung people. There is no electrical grid, but they’ve already adapted their lives a bit to the modern age, so you will see some cellphones and motos. Despite those influences, the panoramic view of the Kalai jungle is still there. You have a broad view over the valley, so you get a good impression of the jungle ahead of you.
From here we walk downhill. Close to the village of Kalai we will see some of their occupants. You can see how the families live and grow their crops. The deeper we go into the jungle, the more the jungle gets a grip on us. There are few streams that we have to cross. Usually they are not deeper than knee deep. We will have lunch close to the river. For those who fancy a swim, you can do it here. After lunch we continue in eastern direction.
We will mainly follow hunting paths. Some parts however are off the beaten track and require some balance and skill. We can also go around these parts, if you don’t feel comfortable. In the early afternoon we will start to loop back towards Kalai, where we will arrive around 3pm. A driver will take us back to Ban lung, where we arrive around 4 pm.
The approximated mate arrival time in ban lung is 4pm
